Originally United Arab Emirates area was inhabited by a sea-faring people who were converted to Islam in the seventh century. Later, a dissident sect , the Carmathians, established a powerful sheikdom, and its army invaded Mecca. After sheikdom disintegrated, its people became pirates.

The United Aarab Emirates was formed in 1971 by seven emirates known as the trucial States-Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras al-Khaimah and Umm al-Qaiwain.

The loose federation allows joint politics in foreign relations, defense, and development, with each member emirate keeping its own internal local system by its own ruler.

A 40-member legislature consists of eight seats each for Abu Dhabi and Dubai, six seats each for Ras al-Khaimah and Sharjah, and four each for the others.

It is a member of the Arab League.

The United Arab Emirates, in the east part of the Arabian Peninsula, extends along part of the Gulf of Oman and the southern coast of the Arabian Gulf.

Its neighbors are Saudia Arabia in the west and south, Qatar in the north, and Oman in the east. Most of the land is barren and sandy.
